Free menu bar app for Mac
Våken — Norwegian for “awake” — is a small coffee cup in your menu bar. Click it and your Mac stays awake through the download, the presentation or the long export. Click again and it sleeps as normal.
Version 1.2.0 · 0.9 MB · macOS 12 or later · Apple silicon & Intel · Free
How it works
Våken has no app window and no Dock icon. Everything happens from the cup in your menu bar: when it steams, your Mac is awake. When the time is up, Våken lets go on its own.

Keep Awake For
Try it: click the cup to turn it on or off, or pick a duration.
Made to be forgotten
Click the cup in your menu bar and it starts to steam — your Mac stays awake. Click again to turn it off.
15 minutes, 1 hour, 8 hours or indefinitely. The menu shows how much time is left and when it lets go.
Just need a download or export to finish? Turn on “Allow Display to Sleep” and save power.
Våken tells you when a new version is out — or installs it for you automatically. Your choice.
When you need it
Install
Download Vaaken.dmg and double-click it to open the disk image.
Double-click the Våken cup and choose “Move to Applications”. It installs itself and starts right away. (Dragging it to Applications works too.)
The first time, macOS asks if you want to open an app downloaded from the internet — click “Open”. Våken then starts automatically every time you log in.
Våken lives in the menu bar at the top right. Click: on/off. Right-click: options. If your menu bar is full, Våken tells you how to make room.
Questions & privacy
Nothing. Våken is free — no ads, no subscription.
Yes. Våken is signed with FringeNode's Apple Developer ID and notarized by Apple, which means Apple has checked it for malware. The app never touches your files — it only asks macOS not to sleep.
Yes. Våken runs natively on both Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
Våken uses the same macOS feature that video players and presentation apps use (a “power assertion”). When you turn it off or quit, your Mac sleeps exactly as normal again.
No. With the lid closed a MacBook sleeps anyway, unless it's connected to an external display and power. That's a built-in macOS limit.
A few times a day Våken checks fringenode.no for a new version. You'll be asked before anything is installed — unless you turn on “Install Updates Automatically”. Every update is cryptographically signed by FringeNode, and Våken refuses anything that isn't.
Only what you choose to give us. On first launch Våken asks for your email — you can skip it — and, in a separate box, whether you want our newsletter. The update check only fetches a file from fringenode.no. No analytics, no tracking.
Right-click the cup → “Quit Våken”, then drag Våken.app from Applications to the Trash. Done.

FringeNode builds custom software, apps and courses that make everyday work simpler. Våken started as a small tool we needed ourselves — now it's yours, for free.
